Financing Corporate India's Growth - Trends, Issues & Opportunities
9th October, 2007
Taj President, Cuffe Parade, Mumbai, India

The “India Story” has seen a profound shift in gear and direction during 2006. As predicted by IIFT’s symposium on M&A last year, it seems the whole year was about M&A. And 2007 seems no different with major acquisitions like Tata-Corus and Hindalco-Novelis already setting the markets abuzz. This trend has been a key factor helping Indian companies to emerge on the global stage.

Now going one step ahead, the question is how we can fund the insatiable growth engine of Indian corporate. What can be the different avenues of financing? In this era of globalization, India Inc is looking at both domestic and international sources of funds While some firms are financing for growth and acquisition phase, there is no dearth of virgin firms who are obfuscated about the best way to raise capital. Similarly there are different challenges in different markets. What may be the best for one company might be the worst for another company. Different challenges and issues call for different modes of financing as well. This is where SPVs, Structured financing, & VC/PEs come in. Customization is the name of the game.

But now arises the question – what if the financial sector of our country is not able to sustain this euphoria? What can be the alternatives in that case? How can the savings from a common investor be put to good use for the country, how can Indian companies handle SOX, what roles can credit rating agencies play and last but not least the age old but relevant question of debt Vs Equity are all the raging topics of today.

It is in this regard that the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) invites the strategists to provide their invaluable inputs. This seminar is another effort by the institute to offer the leaders a platform to share their views.
